Another big state, Illinois, has passed a law that requires even backseat passengers to buckle up.

Seat belt use is increasing partly due to publicized enforcement, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is leading some states to require that both front and rear passengers be secured in their seats.

The Illinois law was passed earlier this summer and took effect yesterday. It allows police officers to pull over a vehicle if they notice unbelted passengers. Fines start at $25.

Illinois is the latest state to require that all passengers wear seat belts. According to the IIHS, 25 other states and the District of Columbia have laws mandating that rear-seat occupants must wear seat belts. All states except New Hampshire require front-seat occupants to wear belts.
