Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows chief Steve Sinofsky says Windows 8 will require less memory (NASDAQ:DRAM) than Windows 7, making it easier for Windows 8 to run on CPUs featuring ARM (NASDAQ:ARMH) cores.
First day pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S exceeded 1 million on Friday, beating the previous record of 600,000 held by the iPhone 4, reported Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) today. The device will be available in stores in the U.S. on October 14,and will be rolled out in 22 more countries within the month.
Plato Learning has upped its buyout offer for Renaissance Learning (NASDAQ:RLRN) to $496 million, a $25 million premium on their prior offer. Renaissance has already agreed to a $455 million deal with Permira Funds, but says it will give Plato’s offer “proper consideration in due course.”
Alibaba is interested in buying the 40% of the company held by Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), and is in talks with investment company Temasek about providing financing. Yahoo’s holding in Alibaba is worth an estimated $13 billion.

Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) has withdrawn its offer to buy Hulu (NASDAQ:CMCSA) in order to focus on its own problems. Dish Network (NASDAQ:DISH), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) remain in the running for the streaming-video site, with the latter offering over $2 billion. However, Hulu’s owners — Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA), News Corp. (NASDAQ:NWSA), and Disney (NYSE:DIS) — may still decide not to sell.
