Oil major BP (NYSE:BP) has taken Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), its contractor for the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon oil platform that caused the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, to court. The oil company is seeking damages for clean up costs, loss-of-profits, and all other costs connected to the spill.

These costs could be billions of dollars considering BP has already made a provision of $20 billion towards spill claims.

BP’s oil spill involved three parties in the drilling operation – Transocean (NYSE:RIG), Halliburton and Cameron International (NYSE:CAM). Cameron concluded a $250 million settlement with BP in December. No headway has been made on settlement agreements with Transocean — the owner and operator of the affected oil rig — or Halliburton, the supplier of cement used to cap the well.
