The new fulfillment center — a large warehouse where merchandise is stored for quick shipping — will be Amazon’s second in Delaware. The facility is is being built in Middletown, which has a population of just 18,871, according to the 2010 Census.
Amazon has been spending heavily on expansion, setting up more than 10 new fulfillment centers in the United States last year alone. Amazon also has fulfillment centers in China, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom, according to its website.
Amazon’s first fulfillment center on the East Coast was opened in New Castle, Delaware, in 1997. The New Castle center employes hundreds of workers, and will remain open despite the construction of a new facility.
The Middletown facility is scheduled for completion this fall. Like the New Castle center, the size of the workforce employed by the facility in Middletown will vary with the time of year.
