Though the grounding on January 16 was a considerable and expensive setback, United Airlines CEO Jeff Smisek remains optimistic: “Every new airplane has issues … We’ve worked with Boeing to fix them. We’re very confident.” He and Boeing CEO Jim McNerney were among the passengers on the flight Monday, which is reported to have flown without any incidents. Upon the plane’s safe landing, United Airlines (NYSE:UAL) said it expected to have its fleet of 787 Dreamliners back in service this week, allowing United to operate additional flights between Houston and other domestic hub cities.

The Dreamliner 787 made history yesterday as it was the first commercial flight in the U.S. with more than 250 passengers on board. What else is attractive about the aviation supermodel? Not only is it expected to burn 20 percent less fuel and offer more cabin comfort, but Reuters explains that it is “the first aircraft to use an extensive electrical system to replace hydraulics and to use a carbon fiber composite structure.” Though it’s not purposed for short flights, it is more fuel efficient for long rides, and noticeably smoother.

As long as passengers are not too fearful of flying on the plane, the Dreamliner promises to transform the flying experience, as it advertises in its promotional video at the beginning of every United flight. Smisek plans to ramp up production and deliver 60 787 planes this year, if not more.

On Tuesday it was announced that a Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental successfully concluded its initial test flight this week, along with a package of performance improvements including enhanced GE engines. This package was created to improve the fuel efficiency of the jetliner. Boeing Flight Test and Evaluation Capt. Kirk Vining and Chief Pilot Capt. Mark Feuerstein were at the controls when the airplane took off from Paine Field in Everett, Washington, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time, and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle about four hours later.

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE): Current price $23.74

Delaware Governor Jack Markell accompanied officials with GE Aviation to celebrate the addition of around 70 jobs at the firm’s Newark plant. GE Aviation is a division of General Electric Company, and says that it intends to add 70 jobs at the Newark site. Markell will join officials Tuesday in reporting a $27-million investment in support of increased output of ceramic matrix composites, which are lightweight materials that can withstand high temperatures.

American Express Company (NYSE:AXP): Current price $75.23

American Express announced Tuesday it has reached a multi-year marketing arrangement with ShopRunner. Through the terms, ShopRunner will offer American Express domestic Consumer Credit and Charge Cardmembers one-year of free two-day shipping, a benefit currently valued at $79 per year. Beginning May 15, Cardmembers could enjoy a year of free two-day shipping at ShopRunner’s retail partners, which number more than 70, such as Toys”R”Us, PetSmart, drugstore.com, and Sports Authority, among others. For the first time ever, Boeing’s Business Jets is showing off a BBJ 3 at the 2013 European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Geneva. The plane is based upon the 737-900ER, and was equipped with its custom VIP interiors at Jet Aviation in Basel. The BBJ 3 is presently for sale, so the exterior remains “green” or unpainted, and thus ready for a livery chosen by a new owner. On Monday, the United States Supreme Court decided that the Federal Communications Commission possesses the authority to attempt to quicken the process for installing wireless communications towers when local governments have not hurried to act. The case turned on a federal law mandating that state and local governments act on tower-siting applications within a “reasonable period of time.” In a 6-3 vote, the court ruled that the agency has the leeway to interpret ambiguity in the law regarding the extent of its regulatory authority. For its part, the FCC had decided that 90-day and 150-day deadlines concerning decisions on cellphone towers were fair, and a federal appeals court had upheld its decision. On Tuesday, Boeing resumed deliveries of its high-tech 787 Dreamliner jet, marking an end to almost four months in which it could not provide new planes to customers due to safety fears regarding the battery system. The delivery of the first jet with a redesigned battery system is a turning point in Boeing’s 787 crisis, permitting the company to book revenue for completed sales of the jet, which runs at $207 million at list prices. As a result, Boeing shares increased by 1.4 percent to close at $96.11 on the New York Stock Exchange, representing their highest levels since November of 2007.

Profit margins may suffer in the short-term though, since the planes being delivered are also some of the earlier jets, which cost more to produce and were discounted to lure buyers, Reuters notes.

Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX): Netflix content accounts for roughly one-third of broadband traffic in North America, consistent with its rates from a year ago, and poses a mixed blessing for cable and satellite providers. While the raw load of content puts a strain on the providers’ systems, it provides a valuable pitch to sell customers higher internet speeds.

Boeing has delivered a 767-300ER (extended range) to MIAT Mongolian Airlines, marking the first ever direct purchase delivery to the airline. President and Chief Executive of MIAT Mongolian Airlines Jargalsaikhan Gungaa said that ”this is a momentous step forward for MIAT Mongolian Airlines as we continue to enhance our fleet. We are pleased with the comfort, range, and payload of the new 767-300ER, and we look forward to introducing it into our long-haul fleet.” Mongolia’s  carrier finished a historic order in 2011 at the United States State Department in Washington, D.C., being the first time in over two decades that the airline extended its route network by buying Boeing airplanes rather than leasing them.

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE): Current price $22.95

The Chinese power equipment manufacturer XD Group is in discussions to purchase General Electric’s joint venture with Mexico’s Xignux, for as much as $1 billion, reported Bloomberg on Tuesday. GE owns 49.99 percent of the venture, named Prolec GE, which makes power transformer products. The talks are said to be at an early stage. In 2012, GE paid $535 million for a 15 percent interest in China XD Electric Co., which is that country’s largest maker of transmission and distribution equipment.

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ): Current price $86.77

The J&J company Biosense Webster is announcing results from the SMART-AF IDE study on the safety and effectiveness of the Thermocool Smarttouch catheter 85.85 +0.09. the firm reported the 12-month safety and effectiveness results of the catheter and software module in the treatment of symptomatic, drug refractory, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation from the groundbreaking SMART-AF Investigational Device Exemption clinical trial. The 12-month study enrolled 172 subjects (72 percent male and 28 percent female) at 21 centers through out the United States. Thus far, the study attained its prospective safety and effectiveness endpoints with no unanticipated device-related adverse events, and 72 percent of subjects were free from AF recurrence at the close of the 12-month follow-up period.

Boeing (NYSE:BA): Sterne Agee expects the company to benefit significantly from strong commercial aircraft demand, and a book to bill ratio that will be above 1.0 in 2013 and 2014. Stock could increase by 50 percent in value by 2015 says the firm, which keeps a Buy rating on the shares and a raised price target of $120, up from $100.

Swift Transportation (NYSE:SWFT): Cowen believes that Swift remains positioned well for the long-term, after analyst day. The firm calls its growth strategy “bold,” and thinks that the multiple could expand if it produces. It rates the shares a Buy with a $17 price target.

Hartford Financial (NYSE:HIG): Barclays has upgraded Hartford based on upside to its capital management story, driven by buybacks and expanding ROE. Shares are now rated at Overweight, up from Equal Weight, with a price target of $35 from $25.

The financial newspaper Barron’s said that shares of Caterpillar are ready to jump as the economic recovery picks up steam, adding that the stocks rose by 2.7 percent to $86.98 on Friday, following positive  economic news, and that it could be a good entry point for investors having a 12- to 24-month horizon. Barron’s also said that further global growth fears could take the shares back down to $80, but that Caterpillar’s 2.4 percent dividend yield “should ease the pain. Meanwhile, the stock should hit double digits again.”

The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA): Current price $94.19

Gulf airline giants Emirates and Qatar Airways, while they get ready to purchase Boeing’s new 777X jet, warn that Boeing must not repeat the errors of the 787 Dreamliner, which cost its customers millions of dollars due to its batteries failing. These rapid-growing Gulf carriers should be among the first and possibly largest customers for Boeing’s latest offering, which was shown to customers last week. Emirates’ President Tim Clark commented, “For sure they have changed, I hope they have. Boeing came out of the ashes of the Sonic Cruiser years ago and came up with the Dreamliner, which was a leap of faith by any stretch. They were just beginning to stabilize when things went wrong again.”

United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX): Current price $95.22

UTX’s Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. said that the Federal Aviation Administration has okayed a new functionality on the S-92 helicopter, through which  to supply offshore oil operators with an automated approach that lowers cockpit workload by 60 percent and enables safer operations under challenging weather and operating situations. Sikorsky developed the new safety feature working jointly with PHI, which is an important Sikorsky customer operating S-92 and S-76 helicopters in the Gulf of Mexico, giving transportation to offshore oil workers to the platforms there. ”Rig Approach” will be an option on the S-92 helicopters, providing a fully coupled and automated approach capability, along with a higher safety margin than is now available with any other offshore approach procedure.

UTX announced that it has initiated cash tender offers for any and all of two series of outstanding notes issued by the Goodrich Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary, and as much as $500 million of principal amount of the 1.2- percent Senior Notes due 2015 issued by UTC. Through these offers, UTC expects to repay a portion of the long-term debt issued by Goodrich, along with a portion of debt issued by UTC.  UTC does not guarantee the Goodrich notes, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission registration of the Goodrich notes was terminated on July 27, 2012.

Alcoa (NYSE:AA): Current price $8.70

Officials in Stanly County, North Carolina, which is the location of  closed Alcoa aluminum smelter, are considering an agreement that could take away a hurdle to the corporation renewing a license for dams that once powered the plant, and now generate electricity for sale. County commissioners met on Monday to examine a deal that could end an Alcoa lawsuit pressing officials for more information. For their parts local officials could end their efforts to disallow a state water-quality certification the company requires to win a federal operating license for as much as 50 additional years.

The aluminum major says that it will enlarge a facility in Tennessee, boosting its capacity to make aluminum sheet for the automotive industry. Alcoa will shell out $275 million on the factory during the next three years in support of automotive producers’ plans to employ increasing amounts of aluminum sheet to increase safety, fuel efficiency, durability and performance of cars and light trucks. The company expects that the expansion will add 200 full-time jobs and 400 temporary jobs, created during the construction phase of the expansion, which is set to begin in May, with completion expected by mid-2015.

Boeing (NYSE:BA): Now that the worst of its 787 saga has blown over, Societe Generale finds that there are many positive aspects going for the company, and has accordingly awarded the company with an upgrade, from Sell to Hold. The firm also raised its price target from $86 to $94. “With deliveries resumed and the 787 targeted to reach full production of 10 per month by the end of the year we see strong cash generation in the medium term supporting the buyback programme as well as dividend increases,” the analyst noted.

Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM): Yum! has been cleared by the Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Committee for allegations that it sourced meat from a supplier currently under investigation, as Yum!’s Little Sheep restaurant chain was posted on the agency’s website mistakenly. Surely a relief for the company, which has been facing sales skids related to food safety concerns since last year.

Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF): The clothing retailer, infamous for its dark stores and thundering bass music, is catching heat for its refusal to market clothes to plus-size people, and instead only marketing clothing to “attractive, all-american” people of a specific size, according to CEO Michael Jeffries.

Priceline (NASDAQ:PCLN): Following a short dip after the company revealed its quarterly earnings, shares are back up on minor price target bumps from investment firms, many had positive remarks on the company. Priceline says it continues to “see economic uncertainty,” and that “competition in the online travel sector remains intense.” However, international bookings were up 43 percent year-over-year, indicating the company is well established to take advantage of rising travel rates.
