Would Apple Buy Adobe?
Higher resolution images and videos that eat into device memory but are becoming the norm because of new retina screen displays could force Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to change tracks from a binary- to vector-oriented graphic model.
Storing images at double the previous resolution (2048×1536 instead of the earlier 1024×768) on devices would require approximately four times the storage space as before. While the newest resolution is currently available only for the new iPad, older devices could be affected if developers started moving toward a unified approach to creating content.
According to ZDNet, despite the unease between Apple and Adobe because of the former’s refusal to accept Flash as an interactive Web content standard, the two already have a slightly symbiotic relationship. Adobe’s graphics creation, image editing and video production programs, including Fireworks, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere, are widely used by developers and creators to create products used on Apple devices.
Adobe has also been working on big upgrades on its digital media programs, lowering recent revenue growth. Revenue rose 1.7 percent to $1.045 billion in the fiscal first quarter ended March 2, according to Reuters.
Adobe’s estimated cost of $17 billion is not likely to be prohibitive for the cash-rich Apple, though, ZDNet suggests, Canadian software company Corel might also be a good acquisition option considering its much lower potential cost.
