Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) became the most recent victim of a high-profile hacking attempt, causing its Azure cloud software to falter for a large portion of Friday night. The attacks, reports The Verge, were similar to those documented by Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) earlier this week.

“During our investigation, we found a small number of computers, including some in our Mac business unit, that were infected by malicious software using techniques similar to those documented by other organizations,” wrote Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Security unit. “We have no evidence of customer data being affected and our investigation is ongoing.”

This is just the latest in a series of hacking attacks, which started with attempts on the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times—an attempt, experts believe, constructed by the Chinese Military.

The programs most affected by the Azure failure were…

Microsoft’s Xbox live services—including Music and Video—which were inhibited for a period of a few hours, to the annoyance of millions of gamers across the world.

Undoubtedly, the attack on Azure is a serious concern for Microsoft, but the damage rendered Friday night was minimal and reparable. The area of most concern, customer privacy, does not look to have been seriously jeopardized as only “a small number” of Microsoft PC’s were compromised and no user data was taken.

The fact that Xbox live went down is disconcerting but should not cause gamers to switch away from Xbox. However, if the attacks somehow manage to persist—however unlikely that may be—it could jeopardize the Xbox gaming community. But, again, that is unlikely seeing as Microsoft will no doubt bolster its defenses.

All in all, the attacks should be of no concern to Microsoft so long as it takes the necessary preventive measures going forward.
