The government of a remote province located in Western China has stated that it is investigating Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) regarding allegations that it illegally mapped parts of the province, as the tension in the word war between China and the US about cyber espionage rises, The Financial Times reports. According to the Yunnan Geographical Information Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the US drinks company was “illegally collecting classified information with handheld GPS equipment,” a Yunnan government website reports. Coca-Cola stated that it “co-operated fully” with the inquiry, and it adds that local bottling plants use “e-map and location-based customer logistics systems that are commercially available in China” as a means to improve customer service and fuel efficiency.
