Will Google Launch This New Device in July?

Rumor has it Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Asus are teaming up to release a 7-inch tablet in time for summer.

Shipments of the device could start as soon as June in preparation for a July release, according a Digitimes report, which estimates initial shipments of 600,000 units with full-year estimates between 2 million and 2.5 million.

Originally, Google planned to release a 7-inch device in May, but the project was delayed because of design and cost issues. The device is not meant to compete with Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad, but rather Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) lower-priced Kindle Fire, the second-best selling tablet on the market.

The company is expected to unveil the new tablets at Google’s I/O conference, which starts June 27 in San Francisco, with each developer receiving a device, according to reports from TechnoBuffalo. It’s unclear if the tablet will run the next version of Android technology, Jelly Bean.

The tablet is expected to include NVIDIA Corp.’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) quad-core Tegra-3 and be priced around $200. Apple is rumored to be working on a 7-inch iPad in the $200 to $250 price range.
