Will Google and LG Heat Up the Smartphone Market With Their Partnership?

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) has reportedly given LG (LGEAF.PK) the opportunity to build its next Nexus smartphone.

According to the technology publication CNET, the phone will be announced at the end of the month and be modeled on LG’s recently unveiled flagship phone, the Optimus G.

A new Nexus phone would be beneficial for both Google and LG, not only increasing LG’s presence in the United States, but providing a means for Google to showcase the latest version of its operating system, Android 4.2, which will be announced next month.

The technology forum Modaco has already listed detailed specifications for the device. Like the Optimus G, the phone is expected to have Qualcomm’s (NASDAQ:QCOM) Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM, a 1,280 x 768 True-High Definition IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a non-removable battery. The phone will also have no microSD slot, and only 8 to 16 gigabytes of storage.

Google’s possible partnership with LG is not the only possible contender. According to CNET’s sources, there has been talk that more than one smartphone manufacturer will build a new Nexus device. Already, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has built two smartphones, the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus, and HTC (HTCCY.PK) created the original Nexus One.

So far, LG has struggled to survive in the competitive smartphone market and has yet to turn a profit. The company is hoping to emulate the success of Samsung’s Galaxy line with its Optimus phone, which is carried by AT&T (NYSE:T), but the market is crowded. Nevertheless, a partnership with Google could give the company a leg up.
