Will Apple Bring Maps to Mountain Lion?

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may not limit its new Maps app to iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, but may also bring its in-house mapping solution to the Mac.

Don’t Miss: The NEWEST iPad Mini Rumor.

Developer Cody Cooper discovered a code dump in the new Maps application in Apple’s iOS 6 beta, which was released to developers ahead of the new operating system’s wide release in the fall. The code mentions a set of Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) graphics chipsets found in Mac hardware.

Cooper said he found the software disabled features like shading on certain Intel graphics chipsets. Because some older Intel chipsets have poor support for shading, he said, Apple would want to disable that capability for some Macs.

The code suggests that Apple could be planning to bring its new Maps software to its next OS X in addition to iOS, said Cooper. That’s bad news for Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), which is already having its own iOS maps offering displaced, but may now come up against competition on personal computers as well.

Apple’s new Maps app certainly has all the bells and whistles one would expect from the tech company, including a new crowd-sourced traffic service, built-in turn-by-turn navigation, and integrated user reviews from Yelp (NYSE:YELP).

Maps in iOS 6 will also feature Siri integration, allowing users to ask for directions of find points of interest by using just their voice. And the new “Flyover” feature has garnered a lot of buzz, as it purports to detail 3D models of cities from around the world with extreme clarity.
