Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ:BRCM): Like many semiconductor device companies, Broadcom Corp. is experiencing the sting of a sluggish global economy. However, while the chip industry should contract about 2% during 2012, Broadcom hopes to deliver 3% organic-revenue growth for the year (excluding a NetLogic Microsystems acquisition benefit), in spite of the company’s large size. Their growth benefits will come from a “communications-centric,” product portfolio, one of the fastest-growing sub-segments of the chip group.

Western Digital Corp. (NYSE:WDC): After research firm CSLA warned that personal computer sales in beginning markets are slowing more than they previously anticipated, many stocks related to PCs are slipping. In a note to investors this morning, CLSA analyst Nicolas Baratte reported that he expects PC sales in these markets to start growing again during this quarter before increasing by 9% in 2013. The analyst continues to have a cautious view of Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), Dell (NASDAQ:DELL), Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX), and Western Digital (NYSE:WDC), and he mentioned that Dell and Hewlett-Packard seem to be unable to come back from sizable share losses in the PC market. Baratte maintains Underperform ratings on Seagate, Western Digital, and Hewlett-Packard with an Outperform rating on Dell.
