The South Korean handset manufacturer will unveil its latest high-end smartphone at an event in New York on Thursday, and everybody will be tuned in to the proceedings to see whether Samsung had enough moxie to produce a device that can help the company maintain its edge in the  increasingly-crowded smartphone market.

With Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone  – as always — nipping at Samsung’s heels, it is especially important that the company delivers an inventive new device.

That Samsung choose the United States as the location for its launch proves that the company is taking the fight for mobile dominance to Apple’s home front. As Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston told The Wall Street Journal, “Samsung is facing strong pressure from Apple in the U.S., and Samsung needs to strike back with a competitive flagship smartphone.”
