Time magazine has named Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) latest iPhone 5 its top device of 2012, while the new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display also ranked among the top-ten gadgets of the year.
The new iPhone beat out Nintendo’s Wii U game console, which includes a controller with a tablet-style touchscreen, to second place. The iPhone 5 was “one of the most artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built,” according to the magazine’s write-up, which added that it outperformed other “nifty” smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S III. “When it comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade away, Apple still has no peer,” the report added.

Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) Cyber-Shot RX100 camera was third, while the Raspberry Pi Model B computer board and the Lytro light-field camera completed the top-five. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was placed sixth, with Apple’s fanciest notebook getting described as a “joy to use.”
Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) brand-new Surface tablet earned laurels to come up in seventh place, a spot ahead of Samsung’s Galaxy Note II phone-tablet hybrid. The Nest thermostat was in ninth place and was followed in the last of the top ten by the Simple.TV set-top box.
