Tech BUZZ: Texas Instruments’ PROJECT, Facebook Intrudes On PRIVACY

A current Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) project is the optimization of its network processors for the early stage OpenFlow standard. OpenFlow, which is grounded in the concept of software-defined networking, constitutes a threat to sales of Cisco’s (NASDAQ:CSCO) proprietary Ethernet switches and others, through its dependence on off-the-shelf chips and open standards. TXN’s use of OpenFlow could help it better compete against market majors Broadcom (NASDAQ:BRCM) and Marvell (NASDAQ:MRVL).

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has perhaps settled upon the idea of mobile news feed ads which target consumers based on the applications they use, as a way of increasing its advertising revenue. As with its scheme for delivering mobile ads that are informed by a user’s location, and PC ads that are keyed to a user’s web browsing, this new idea might be attacked by privacy advocates, but so far the firm has dodged the backlash bullet.
