Tech Business Recap: Apple Turned DOWN, Facebook Has Another GO At GM

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) request for an emergency customs ban on HTC Android (NASDAQ:GOOG) devices is turned down by the United States International Trade Commission, but the agency is investigating whether redesigned phones from the handset producer in Taiwan is still grounds for the infringement of Apple’s “data detectors” patent.

Don’t Miss: Is Apple Getting a NEW Look?

Samsung (SSNLF.PK) lost its request on Monday for District Judge Lucy Koh to lift her ban on domestic sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, prior to a patent trial this month with Apple. This Samsung loss is serious, as such pretrial injunctions are somewhat rare; the firm’s next step is in a Federal appeals court in Washington.

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) might get another crack at General Motors (NYSE:GM) advertising, as the two parties are again in discussion of the matter. The latter snubbed FB in a very public way in May, but its Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg is said to have met with GM CEO Daniel Akerson in order to attempt to persuade him that advertising on the site can indeed bring higher revenues for the automaker through a more sophisticated use of data. In the meantime, Facebook is seeking out firms for acquisition that operate on its own platform, says its executive Amin Zoufonoun, and that FB is trying to maximize its profits in doing so. Such a strategy might also make the company a potential rival to application developers.
