Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) announced plans to add beer, wine and deluxe food items such as hot flatbread and upscale snacks to the menus at a few stores in Atlanta and Southern California by the end of this year.

The changes, planned for four to six cafes in both Atlanta and Southern California, are part of the company’s attempt to explore moving beyond the morning and afternoon coffee market.

The coffee chain made similar menu changes at a Seattle cafe in October 2010, with five Seattle stores and one in Portland, Ore. now offering the new items. In late 2011, similar plans were announced for five to seven Starbucks locations in the Chicago area.
