Apple’s September 12th Event: iPhone 5 or iPad Mini?

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will unveil a new product at a major September 12 event, according to a source familiar with the plan. It’s likely the new product will be the iPhone 5, as Apple likes to launch its latest smartphones around fall, allowing them to hit shelves in time for the peak holiday shopping season, but the event could also see the premiere of a widely-rumored iPad Mini.

The fifth iteration of Apple’s smartphone is expected to be thinner, with a smaller dock connector and larger screen, according to sources and analysts. The iPad Mini, which Apple has neither confirmed nor denied exists in any form, is expected to be smaller than previous iPads, likely with a 7-inch screen, making it closer in size to Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Fire and other lower-end tablets. It is also expected to be comparably priced. Currently, the least expensive iPad available is the entry-level iPad 2 for $399.

Apple launches are among the most hyped and widely speculated events in Silicon Valley, scrutinized by technology investors, consumers, and the media. And while Apple usually tries to keep its plans for these events secret, the proceedings often come as little surprise, as sources from within Apple or its suppliers often leak accurate information. It should be noted that this particular source, which spoke to Reuters, gave no indication of what Apple will introduce at the September event, only when it will take place. The source also said that date may shift.
