Salesforce.com Leaves Oracle and SAP AG in the Dust
Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) is challenging Oracle Corp (NASDAQ:ORCL) and SAP AG (ADR) by introducing new software for human resources management, an application to help businesses run their operations. Salesforce is the largest maker of online customer management software, and specializes in programs delivered in installments over the Internet, as opposed to Oracle and SAP, which depend on upfront purchases.
Salesforce.com has announced their new product, Rypple, that will work in conjunction with the company’s customer relationship management software and Chatter social network for companies. The application has features that will allow managers to recognize employees who do exceptional work. Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff is expected to discuss the software during a keynote address at Salesforce’s Cloudforce conference in San Francisco.
Salesforce acquired Rypple in December and plans on having its service serve as an alternative to the applications SAP picked up through the $3.4 billion acquisition of SuccessFactors Inc. (NASDAQ:SFSF) and those Oracle gained in 2005 when it bought PeopleSoft Inc. The company has also released a software called Site.com to help marketing departments build Web campaigns.
Salesforce’s approach “software as a service,” allows customers to rent business applications rather than install them on their own servers. Companies will not have to hire consultants to make programs work together. They simply arm employees with new software, without the hassle of buying underlying hardware, databases, and application-connecting middleware.
Salesforce is looking to bring solutions into the workflow people use in everyday life, and incorporate social media to the way companies operate.
