RIM Slammed With Yet Another Patent Suit

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) has been accused of infringing six patents owned by NXP Semiconductor NV (NASDAQ:NXPI), according to a Bloomberg report. The Netherlands-based chipmaker is seeking cash compensation and a court order to block further use of its invention in a complaint filed yesterday in the U.S. federal court in Orlando, Florida.

NXP contends that certain RIM products, including the BlackBerry Torch, PlayBook, Curve, and Bold, are using its patented inventions without permission. The patents cover technology used to expand the range of data transmission, computer bus systems, mobile phones with GPS receivers, circuit manufacturing, a process for polishing the surface of wafers, and the patterning of layers on the wafer.

Spokeswoman Marisa Conway said RIM doesn’t comment on pending litigation. RIM shares fell 9.46 percent during regular trading on Tuesday. Last week, a graphics company that went bankrupt in 2009 accused Research in Motion, as well as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other device manufacturers, of violating a single one of its patents.
