Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM): According to an unconfirmed report, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will use a version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon system on a chip in a rumored low-cost iPhone, and the manufacturing of the rumored handset is expected to start during Q2. Japanese blog Macotakara cites the China Times in reporting that an unnamed industry watcher claimed that Apple has intentions to use Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC’s 28nm process to construct the cheap iPhone’s Snapdragon SoC. If these rumors prove to be true, the switch away from Samsung’s foundries would be a first for the Cupertino company, which pushed further into chip design with its most recent A6 and A6X processors. Apple will supposedly keep manufacturing the A-series silicon that is used in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, along with the A6 chips from the iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad.
