Papandreou Resigns, Petsalnikos Front Runner for Greek Premiership

House Speaker Filippos Petsalnikos will head Greece’s new coalition government, barring any last-minute changes, as Prime Minister George Papandreou officially steps down.

“We have agreed on Petsalnikos but things can change between now and when the prime minister sees the president,” an anonymous source close to the discussions between the ruling Socialists and the conservative opposition New Democracy told Reuters.

Papandreou and opposition leader Antonis Samaris have been in talks since Sunday on who will head the new unity government that will lead the country until elections in February.

Speaking live at a televised evening address on Wednesday, Papandreou said an agreement had been reached with the opposition on the creation of an interim government that will secure the country’s new debt deal.

Though officially tendering his resignation this evening, Papandreou made no mention as to who would succeed him.
