Japanese car sales had a good year in 2012, rising 26% to 3.39 million vehicles, and driven in no small measure by government subsidies that provided incentives for the purchase of fuel-efficient vehicles. These subsidies lapsed by September end, and may have been the reason for the fall in December sales by 3.4% compared to the previous year. Sales during December were off a whopping 39% for Honda Motor Co (NYSE:HMC) due to a scarcity of new models, while Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) lost 3.4 percent.
