The war on soda has expanded this year. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently received approval to restrict sales of soft drinks to no more than 16 ounces throughout the city’s restaurants, movie theaters and stadiums. Now, a video campaign is targeting soda and its sugar content.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued subpoenas over the summer to major companies that make energy drinks, including PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP) and Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST). Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), one of the world’s largest best known brands, escaped the energy drink scrutiny, but now finds itself at the center of the soda debate.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, one of the nation’s top nutrition advocates, released a satire of Coca-Cola’s famous polar bears. The bears are big soda drinkers, and as the video below shows, experience several health problems. The medical conditions featured in the clip range from erectile dysfunction to amputations via chainsaw.
Do you think the satire takes things too far, or is it the kind of wake up call that Americans need? A report released earlier this year by BNY ConvergEx predicts that America’s weight problem is not going to slim down anytime soon. In fact, by 2020 it estimates that 75 percent of the U.S. population will be obese.
Since 1971, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has sought to educate the public on health issues. It prides itself in leading the efforts to win passage of laws that require Nutrition Facts on packaged foods, and helped New York City adopt the nation’s first ordinances to ban trans fat from restaurants and list calorie information on menus and menu boards.
