Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL): According to The New York Times, jurors are expected to deliberate this week so that a verdict can be reached in the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) vs Samsung patent case. If Apple wins, rival companies will likely make smartphones and tablets that look very different from those of Apple. A Samsung win could mean that Apple’s competitors will keep making products that look similar to the iPhone and iPad. Their shares traded up $15.97 (2.46%), they were recently at $664.08.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG): Google’s Motorola Mobility division has filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that features in the Cupertino, California-based company’s devices infringe on their patents. According to Bloomberg, the company filed the lawsuit with the International Trade Commission and it includes a request for a ban on imports of the iPhone, iPad and Mac computers. The report said the complaint involves seven patents, including one that alleges Apple’s Siri technology infringes on a Motorola patent. The report also says that none of the patents qualify as “standard-essential” patents, which cover technology that must be incorporated into an invention complying with industry standards. Courts set the licensing rates for those patents and the Federal Trade Commission has argued that there should be no import bans on products that violate only these standard patents. Google Inc.’s shares traded up $1.02 (0.15%), they were recently at $678.16.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT): With Windows 8, Microsoft has completely overhauled the license agreements they are presenting to customers. Historically, these end user license agreements, or EULAs, have been lengthy documents written in dense legalese. The new EULAs break this mold completely and the English-language versions are now written in simple, easy-to-understand language. Their shares traded down $0.1 (0.32%), they were recently at $30.805.
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC): Intel’s McAfee unit, which is best known for software that fights PC viruses, is one of a handful of firms that are looking to protect the dozens of tiny computers and electronic communications systems that are built into every modern car.
