Mergers and Acquisitions: Talisman Not For Sale, IBM Buys Butterfly

Talisman Energy Inc. (NYSE:TLM) shares continue Friday’s slide, following Chief Exevcutive Hal Kvisle’s comment that his firm is not in talks about selling out. Instead, Kvisle intends to identify assets, such as those in the North Sea, that need additional investment. In July, Talisman arranged with Sinopec to spend $1.5 billion in the North Sea assets in exchange for a 49 percent stake.

International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE:IBM) has purchased Butterfly Software, a privately held data analysis and migration software firm headquartered in Maidenhead, England, and it will become a part of of IBM’s Software Group. Financials of the transaction were not divulged. The acquisition should help the buyer better compete with EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) and Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC), which both offer an extensive array of data migration/replication solutions.
