Look Out Smartphones, Tablets Are Coming for Your App Revenue!
ABI Research, a technology market research company, predicts that application revenue for tablets will reach as high as $8.8 billion in 2013. That is approximately 35 percent of the $25 billion in total app revenue forecasted for this year. Although smartphone apps are expected to generate nearly twice that amount this year with predicted app revenues of $16.4 billion, tablets are quickly making inroads into mobile device app market.
According to Adobe’s Digital Index via TechCrunch, the amount of web traffic coming from tablets surpassed smartphones for the first time earlier this month. This is especially impressive given that tablets in their current iteration have only been on the market since April 2010, when Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) released the first iPad.
Much of the increase in app usage on tablets can be attributed to the screens, which are significantly larger than smartphones. As senior analyst Aapo Markkanen points out in a statement reported by TechCrunch, “The larger screen makes apps and content look and feel better, so there are more lucrative opportunities.”
