Coming on the heels of Facebook’s announcement that the social networking site would be adding advertising to its mobile applications, the people behind LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) have announced that they, too, will add ads to their mobile apps.

While hosting an analysts’ call to discuss the company’s fourth quarter earnings, CEO Jeff Weiner only briefly mentioned LinkedIn’s plans, stating only that the company had been looking into advertising for some time now. But while advertising details may have been scant, the rest of the call was devoted almost entirely to mobile app development.

LinkedIn launched its redesigned apps last August, and mobile is the company’s fastest growing division. Presently, mobile usage accounts for about fifteen percent of users’ time spent on LinkedIn — and that number is expected to grow significantly.

In regards to the various platforms for smartphones, Weiner stated that, “We’re seeing a sharp rise in activations across both the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS platform and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android,” though he clarified that they are “seeing more activations in iOS, but both are growing at very healthy rates.”

When questioned about recent acquisition CardMunch, an app that scans and stores business cards, Weiner reiterated an earlier report that the app recently scanned its two-millionth business card.
