Is There a Problem With Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner?

Boeing’s (NYSE:BA) new carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner jet has fallen under scrutiny after Qatar Airways refused to accept a delivery due to concerns over a problem with the aircraft’s engines.

The fast-growing airline’s Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said that no deliveries of the new commercial planes would be taken until a “material defect” in the engines is addressed. The engines are designed by General Electric (NYSE:GE), which couldn’t have received this blow at a worse time. The world’s foremost jet-engine manufacturer is facing fierce competition and strong demand as of late.

Problems with GE’s new GEnx jet engine are due to failure by a part called the fan midshaft, which Al Baker says “needs replacement and inspection at very short intervals.”

These issues mark yet another hurdle in what has been a long line of headaches for Boeing and its Dreamliner program, which has already been delayed multiple times. Boeing will be forced to compensate its customers for the delay while the latest problems with its 787 are corrected.

Boeing posted a report of new orders to its website Thursday, as well. The post detailed 172 new orders since last week, including orders for three 787s. Boeing has made 436 commercial airplane deliveries so far this year.
