Is the iPad Mini Getting an Upgrade?

The iPad mini is only a little more than a month old, but chatter about a newer version of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) smaller tablet is already getting loud. Last month, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster had said a Retina display on the iPad mini would be the next move from Apple. And on Friday, a new rumor suggested that the company was already working on upgrading the resolution of the tablet.

Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, sometimes known for its inaccurate predictions, cited sources from the backlighting industry to suggest that a Retina screen at 2,048 by 1,536 pixels was on its way on the next generation of the 7.9-inch tablet. That would actually end up yielding a higher pixel density than the full-size iPad’s 264 ppi because of the screen size difference.

The report added that Apple was also modifying the full-size iPad’s LED backlighting system to go from dual light bars to one in an attempt to reduce the width and weight of the tablet.
