Is Shell Set to Expand in Canada?

Royal Dutch Shell’s (NYSE:RDSA)(NYSE:RDSB) $12-billion proposal to expand its Jackpine oilsands mine in northern Alberta has caused outrage among the region’s aboriginal groups and international conservation groups, as the project will decimate up to 70 square miles of wetlands. Yet, the Alberta Court of Appeal has denied the aboriginal groups their request for further regulatory review even though Shell has acknowledged that the area will be negatively affected.

Why Did the Court Rule in Favor of Shell?

In late October, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation requested that the federal-provincial joint panel reviewing Shell’s proposed expansion halt its hearings so that the band could file a constitutional challenge with the Alberta Court of Appeal.
