A monthly survey by CBIZ Inc. shows that employment by U.S. small businesses grew 0.35% in November, the first gain in four months. The survey defines a small business as any company that employs less than 300 employees. CBIZ suggests that the increase is attributed to seasonal holiday hiring.

MarketWatch quoted Philip Noftsinger, Business Unit President for CBIZ Payroll Services, who said, “The small business owners we’re engaged with still remain cautious because of continued economic concerns.  However, a slight increase in employee hiring has been traced to the holiday shopping season. While that may not inspire confidence in terms of future economic growth, those numbers are modestly better than in 2009 and 2010.”

CBIZ’s survey found that 23% of employers surveys cut workforce in November, 24% added employees and 54% had no change. Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADP) also reported a hiring increase of 206,000 from October to November.
