The Intel-ARM Rivalry is HEATing Up

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) may not have had much success in breaking the hold of ARM (NASDAQ:ARMH) in the mobile processor world yet, but it is now using a novel way to carve out market space for its smaller chips. Earlier this week, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) announced a new line of servers that will be powered by Intel’s mobile chips. The Gemini line of servers, meant to power low-energy tasks, will be available by the end of the year.

HP’s decision was something of a surprise as the earlier part of its Project Moonshot, which aims to make low-power servers more attractive to large cloud providers, included ARM-based models. While ARM may not exactly react by developing a server-oriented chip, the development does give an added element to the rivalry between the two. While Intel dominates with desktops, laptops, and server processor market, it has nothing on ARM when it comes to smartphones and tablets. The latest twist by Intel will certainly make this rivalry a lot more interesting.
