Here’s An All-New Way to Pre-Order the iPhone 5

Marking a first, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) will take pre-orders for the new Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and offer discounts on the smartphone. The iPhone 5 can be ordered starting Friday, September 14, at 8 a.m. in stores in the U.S., Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer told Bloomberg. Pre-orders will be available for pick-up on September 21, Spencer said.

The 16 GB version of the smartphone will retail for $189.97 with a two-year wireless contract, cheaper than the $199 price announced by Apple at the launch. At Apple’s website and at wireless operators Sprint (NYSE:S), AT&T (NYSE:T), and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) the phone is available in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB versions for $199, $299, and $399, respectively.

Wal-Mart has also slashed prices of older iPhone models, with the 4S now being sold for $89.97 with a two-year contact and the iPhone 4 retailing for 97 cents on contract.

The new iPhone 5 features a larger screen than that of its predecessors at four inches and is thinner and lighter. It supports the faster 4G LTE wireless data networks, is powered by Apple’s homemade A6 processor, and runs the new iOS 6 mobile operating system. The device is available in black and white.

The phone will go on sale in nine countries on the first day and add 22 more before the end of September. Apple has said the device will be available in 100 countries and on 240 carriers by the end of December.
