September will define the near future for mobile tech. The expected announcement of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 on September 12 looms large on everyone’s calendar, and with iPhone 4 trade-ins spiking 70%, the event promises to be huge. In light of this, the other major tech players are desperately trying to get an edge before the avalanche.
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) will try and take some of the spotlight on September 5 when they are expected to announce the Lumina 820 and 920, the first marriage between Nokia phones and the Windows Phone 8 OS. This could be a last-ditch play by Microsoft and Nokia as they fight for a foothold in the mobile world. If the announcement isn’t received well, they might be forced to bow out.

On the same day, Motorola (NYSE:MMI) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) will be holding an event in New York City. This is the first big event Motorola is holding since being acquired by Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), and there is speculation that they will announce the RAZR HD to battle Nokia’s Lumina 820 and Lumina 920. Android is more pervasive than the Windows Phone 8 OS right now, but as the underdog and with so much on the line, Nokia is generating more buzz.
On September 6, following the news Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) sold out of Kindle Fire tablets, Amazon is expected to announce a successor. The Kindle Fire is presumably the top-selling Android tablet in the US, but Amazon will have a hard time turning heads away from the other major announcements this month.
