Relief over China’s second quarter gross domestic product numbers fueled some gains in the energy sector among the S&P listed stocks Alpha Natural Resources (NYSE:ANR), Noble Corporation (NYSE:NE), and Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE:COG). Oil prices were up modestly Friday, due to the report from China not being any worse than was anticipated.

Shares of James River Coal (NASDAQ:JRCC) continue their bad week, subsequent to an operational update from CONSOL Energy (NYSE:CNX) which indicated lower production in the third quarter. Oppositely, shares of the latter firm traded higher on the day, perhaps thanks to news that two of its key mines remained accident-free during the last quarter.
