American Airlines parent AMR Corp. has been approved for its merger with US Airways Group (NYSE:LCC) from a judge who rejected a $20 million severance deal for Chief Executive Officer Tom Horton. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane in Manhattan approved this merger at a hearing on Wednesday as he denied approval for Horton’s severance after opposition from the U.S. government, describing the pay as a “golden parachute.” The agreement’s approval moves Fort Worth, Texas-based American a step closer to completing its reorganization and exiting bankruptcy protection. Furthermore, the carrier filed for bankruptcy in November 2011, and it announced its merger with US Airways in February.
