Detroit Car Makers Coup

The Detroit Big Three — Ford (NYSE:F), General Motors (NYSE:GM), Chrysler — automakers have managed to increase their U.S. market share in November to 47.2% from 45.1% last year, according to Autodata. The last time automakers in Detroit increased market share was way back in 1988, when their share of the market increased from 70.2% to 73.1%.

This can partly be credited to U.S. automakers strategic moves to introduce fuel-efficient cars such as the Chevrolet Cruze and the Ford Fiesta. These models sold well due to soaring gas prices and better car styling.

Unfortunately, Japanese car makers fell behind after the tragic tsunami and earthquake which disrupted production of cars and components. Recently the Thai flooding caused manufacturing problems for these same companies.

Not surprisingly, most of the gain in market share for the Detroit car makers came at the expense of Toyota (NYSE:TM) and Honda (NYSE:HMC), with Chevrolet the major beneficiary. “It becomes a sensitive issue when you are taking advantage of others during a tragedy, but the reality is, business is business,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends for TrueCar.com.
