Detroit Automakers Stare Down Sandy

Following the closure a Maryland transmission plant on Tuesday, General Motors (NYSE:GM) reported that vehicle sales in the northeastern United States will be impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

The Detroit-automaker did not give an estimate on how deeply sales would be impacted by the closure of the Baltimore plant, however the company did say there would be no significant delays in its supply base deliveries. According to officials, production was suspended all day Tuesday, but is set to resume operations on Wednesday.

GM’s business was also affected by dealerships closures throughout the regions the storm hit.

“We continue to assess the storm’s impact on our dealer network in the storm-affected areas,” GM said in a statement. “Although the storm’s impact will likely affect reported sales from the Northeast U.S., our primary concern is for the safety  of our dealers, their employees and customers in these areas.”

In contrast, Ford (NYSE:F) said its manufacturing had not been affected, but a company spokesman did tell Reuters that it was reasonable to assume that sales would be affected by the storm.”

Ahead of the hurricane, all three Detroit automakers announced that they expected little to no impact on production and supplies from the storm’s severe weather.
