Could This Be the Answer to Apple’s Maps Problems?

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be seeking out some new external help to help fix its maps pain. According to Korean news sources, the iPhone maker has entered into a contract with SK Marketing and Company to improve its maps content. SK M&C’s map data is used on SK Telecom’s (NYSE:SKM) T-map and the firm also provides local content to Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), and Tele Atlas.

According to Patently Apple, the iPhone maker is currently working on making improvements to its vector map based on the data provided by SK M&C. Korean law prohibits external transfer of domestic geospatial information.

Apple launched its own app to replace Google Maps along with the latest version of its mobile operating system in September. However, the program was almost universally panned worldwide for its many data errors and the lack of the Street View feature. Ultimately, Apple chief executive Tim Cook had to apologize for the program, a move that apparently also led to the exit of iOS chief Scott Forstall from the company. Cook added that they were working constantly to improve the user experience.
