Consumer Business Recap: Amazon Crushes Competitor, Sirius XM Signs Audi Deal

Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA), Cablevision (NYSE:CVC), Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC), Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications, say that they will let their high-speed Internet customers share each other’s Wi-Fi networks in metropolitan areas as a value-added service. The hotspots, which number 50,000, will try to gain market share from wireless carriers.

Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) publishing agreement with the historic book publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has led the latter to file for bankruptcy as it tries to make its $3 billion debt go away. The partnership with Amazon was doomed, as sales of hardcover books fell sharply in a large part due to Amazon’s influence, while Houghton piled up more and more debt.

Sirius XM (NASDAQ:SIRI) made an arrangement with Audi (VLKAY.PK) which will give purchasers of a 2013 model year vehicle a 4-year subscription to SiriusXM Traffic. North American Audi buyers currently enjoy a free 3-month subscription to SiriusXM’s basic service.
