Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) will go forward with its plan to join its competitors Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) and Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) in New York City, says Brian Sozzi at NBG. Should politicians and unions keep up their campaign to keep the retailer giant out, it might get around the obstacles by opening smaller-format stores in key neighborhoods.

The Federal Communications Commission will now permit cable companies to purchase local telephone concerns that operate inside their franchise areas. This move could open up the possibility for big players such as Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) or Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWX) to gobble up the small contenders.
