Barnes & Noble Launches World’s Lightest HD Tablets

Innovation is the key to staying relevant in today’s always-evolving digital content and media industry, and to that end, Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) Monday announced two new upgraded editions of its popular Nook tablet readers are now available for preorder.

The launch of the Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets mark the bookseller’s latest impassioned effort to maintain its ground in the cutthroat tablet market. The 7-inch Nook HD and the 9-inch Nook HD+ are both the lightest devices ever made in their respective size categories, and the Nook HD also touts the highest resolution yet seen on a 7-inch HD tablet screen.

It is widely believed that the Nook readers are a lynchpin in Barnes & Noble success, and the bookstore-chain-turned-tablet-maker hopes its newest models can compete with Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) highly anticipated smaller version of the industry-dominating iPad.

The new Nook models will be strategically priced below the expected price of the forthcoming compact iPad, but concerns remain regarding how much room for margins such low prices will leave Barnes & Noble. To complement the launch of the Nook HD and HD+, Barnes & Noble is set to release a line of new Nook apps and best-selling eBooks.
