AT&T to ACQUIRE NextWave Wireless and 4 Telecom Titans Attracting Interest

AT&T, Inc. (NYSE:T) steps up its game once again following the announcement of its plan for the acquisition of NextWave Wireless for $600 million as an attempt to raise its spectrum holdings. The shares traded up $0.24 (0.64%) recently at $37.47.

Don’t Miss: Who Will Rescue RIM?

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S): Today, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services stated that it assigned its ‘B+’ issue-level rating and ’3′ recovery rating to Overland Park, Kansas-based wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp.’s proposed senior notes (undetermined amount and maturity date). The ’3′ recovery rating suggests expectations for meaningful (50 percent to 70 percent) recovery if there is a payment default. The company will most likely use net proceeds for the repayment of upcoming maturities at subsidiary Nextel Communications Inc. The shares traded down $0.08 (1.67%) recently at $4.88.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ):  Now, smartphones account for over half of the mobile phone subscriptions in the United States, and adoption is still accelerating. However, the computer in your pocket is not cheap. Recent data from J.D. Power and Associates suggest that the average monthly wireless bill in 2011 was $86, which is a 25 percent jump over four years. The innovation created by the open Internet offers consumers more options and choices today for the use of their connections. To the relief of the people staring in horror at their monthly voice and text bills, there are apps like Viber, Skype and Google Voice to assist consumers in replacing or reducing the use of their carrier’s overpriced texting and voice plans. The shares traded up $0.15 (0.34%) recently at $44.49.

Leap Wireless International Inc. (NASDAQ:LEAP) has pledged to consider all possible strategy changes, and Bloomberg suggests that the company’s best option for shareholders is M&A. A Leap spokesperson stated that the company is taking specific and significant actions to raise its margins and redirect the company to a path to free cash flow. The shares traded up $0.43 (8.67%) recently at $5.39.

Alcatel-Lucent, S.A. (NYSE:ALU): The slowing growth underlines both France’s faltering short-term growth prospects and a decade-long loss in its share of export markets leading companies from PSA Peugeot Citroen SA (NASDAQ:UG) to Alcatel Lucent SA to cut jobs. On August 8, The Bank of France stated that confidence among factory executives is at a three-year low, which suggests that the economy could contract in both Q2 and Q3. The shares traded up $0.02 (1.69%) recently at $1.20.
