AT&T, Inc. (NYSE:T): AT&T Inc., the second-largest United States wireless-service provider, unveiled a $99 smartphone with a $65 a month pay-as-you-go plan, stepping up competition with prepaid carriers such as MetroPCS Communications Inc. AT&T will start offering the plan on Oct. 7 under their GoPhone brand. The service, designed for smartphone users, is $10 less than previous pay-as-you-go offers with similar features. It includes unlimited talk and texting along with 1 gigabyte of data per month with no contract required.
Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S): According to Bloomberg, Sprint Nextel Corporation is performing well in 2012 and via an acquisition and it looks like the company can improve their base. The company has struggled for many years to get closer to Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T). Chief Executive Officer Dan Hesse’s three-part strategy is working and it has helped the nation’s third largest carrier to get back to track.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ): Apple issued a software update for the iPhone 5 on Verizon Wireless’s network that will fix a problem causing some customers to use their Verizon data allotment when they they’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Level 3 Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:LVLT): According to the Denver Post, TW Telecom is considering selling itself and CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL) is seen as a possible buyer. The two companies have spoken for several weeks and could be near a deal, DealReporter says, adding that Level 3 Communications Inc. has been interested in TW Telecom but “balked at the price”.
Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR): According to the Wall Street Journal, FreedomPop, a start-up, backed by a founder of Skype, will launch a wireless data service that should save customers hundreds of dollars a year. The new service will offer users half a gigabyte of high-speed wireless data per month for free and sell more at cheaper rates than the large carriers.
