AT&T Action in Question by FCC and 4 Telecom Titans in Focus

AT&T, Inc. (NYSE:T):  When Apple releases their next version of  their mobile iOS this fall, iPhone customers will have the option of placing FaceTime video calls over the cellular network; previously, they could only do this on Wi-Fi. On the AT&T, Inc. network, however, that privilege will only be available to customers who have a shared type of data plan, not for those who have the older unlimited or tiered data plans. This  has raised a debate about whether or not the carrier is violating government rules. Public Knowledge, a nonprofit group that focuses on Internet law, said that by prohibiting  their other customers from using the video-calling feature, AT&T is violating net neutrality rules since they would be blocking a service that potentially competes with their own.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S):  Given their rapid growth, shares of Sprint Nextel Corp. are undervalued. The company should see their earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) over the next several years as the wireless industry continues to rationalize and consolidate their new network platform.  This should help Sprint to post a profit beginning in 2014.

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ):  A train derailment west of Baltimore in Ellicott City, early this morning, has damaged Verizon Communications Inc.’s  facilities located at the site of the accident. Some Verizon customers in the area may have trouble completing long distance calls and data services for some business and government customers may also be affected. Verizon is awaiting the okay from local authorities so that they can gain access to the building. The company has already restored services to some customers by re-routing network traffic to other facilities. Technicians will work in round-the-clock shifts until all services are restored to the rest of their customers.

MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (NYSE:PCS):  After Verizon Wireless and AT&T launched plans to target heavy data users, MetroPCS Communications, Inc. has announced a promotional $55 4G LTE service plan that offers unlimited talk, text and data.

Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR):  Dish Network’s Smith, who previously served as Co-Chief for Clearwire Corporation, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to work with all stakeholders in finding a path forward will allow them to launch their nationwide wireless network.
