Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) online store has sold out of its pre-order stock of the fourth-generation iPad, with all versions of the tablet in capacities ranging from 16 GB to 32 GB and both black and white colors currently offering shipping estimates of one week. The company’s retail stores will open sales of the new tablet on Friday.
Apple announced the addition of a faster A6X processor and the Lightning connector to the tablet last week, but the launch of the new model of the tablet was something of a surprise considering the third generation only came out in March. The new generation also adds a high-definition forward-facing FaceTime HD camera and enhanced LTE connectivity, with new carriers including Sprint (NYSE:S) in the U.S. Apple also stressed on the fact that it was not raising the price of the new device, which will start selling at $499 for the 16GB model.

New orders of the Wi-Fi iPad mini are still at two-week shipping estimates, while cellular-capable models of the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad will not ship until later this month. The earliest pre-order customers for those versions in the U.S. are seeing estimated delivery dates beginning November 21.
While new, cheaper devices from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), among others, have chipped at the iPad’s market share, the Apple tablet still held a 70 percent hold in the second quarter.
