Apple’s Jony Ive Made a Special Mac Pro for a Good Cause
Although Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) first unveiled its new Mac Pro in June at the Worldwide Developers Conference, it only recently announced that the product would be available in December. However, impatient Apple fans that want to get their hands on a Mac Pro before its official launch may have an opportunity on November 23, when a red-colored customized edition of Apple’s latest professional desktop computer will be sold at auction via Sotheby’s.
The one-of-a-kind Mac Pro was collaboratively customized by renowned Apple product designer Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson. The auction will benefit Product (RED), a charity set up by Bono and Bobby Shriver to support the global fight against AIDS. The auction is titled “Jony and Marc’s (RED) Auction” and will feature many products customized or designed by these two influential designers.
However, any Apple fans that are interested in acquiring this unique Mac Pro may want to first check their bank accounts. Sotheby’s currently lists an auction estimate of $40,000 to $60,000 for the red Mac Pro, although the product could eventually sell for even more.
The Mac Pro is not the only Apple product that got a Jony Ive makeover for the upcoming auction. Ive also collaborated with Newson on a pair of solid rose-gold earpods. The auction estimate for the earpods is $20,000 to $25,000.
