Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), once the technology leader of the world, is now trying hard to match up to Apple’s tremendous success. On September 5, it has announced a joint press conference with Nokia, where the two companies are believed to be planning the formal introduction of Windows Phone 8 and the first batch of hardware from the Finnish company to run the newest smartphone platform from Microsoft.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) also recently announced its tablet Surface, though many details about the forthcoming device are not yet known. Microsoft has also not announced a launch date for its iPad rival. Ballmer’s company is also preparing to launch Xbox 720 soon.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), meanwhile, is also rumored to be readying its next-generation iPhone next month, as well unveil a smaller-sized iPad that can compete with new rival devices including Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Fire and Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) newly launched Nexus 7.

Shares of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) closed at an record high of $665.15, with a market cap of $623 billion.
