Despite losing ground to Android-powered devices in overall market share, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is still dominating in the air, according to statistics released from Gogo, the inflight Internet provider. A whopping 84 percent of mobile devices used to connect to the internet through Gogo utilize Apple’s iOS system, while only 16 percent carry Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system.

When excluding all devices except for smartphones, Apple is still the clear leader, with iPhones making up 73 percent of the total number of smartphones connected to inflight internet. Android-powered devices claim 26 percent of the smartphone share, while Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows and BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) based devices each take less than 1 percent of the total.

Tablets are still the device of choice for airline passengers, with 35 percent of people using them to access the Internet. Laptops were second with 33 percent, followed by smartphones with 32 percent.

Android has made slight gains in usage since 2011, when only 3.2 percent of devices used Android and 96 percent used iOS. The chart below compares Apple and Google stock movement over the past two years.
